Article Delivering on our Sustainability Ambitions
The 2021 Sustainability Report outlines the actions Schlumberger has taken to operationalize sustainability in relation to performance and achievements.
Ensuring that local communities participate in our business growth
By recruiting, hiring, and training where we work; sourcing from diverse local suppliers; and building regional technology and manufacturing strategies with a high degree of local content
By building local partnerships to drive action in support of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and addressing local challenges of most relevance to SLB and the communities where we live and work
SLB's long-established values have always included a commitment to invest in and have a positive impact on the communities in which we live and operate. Our commitments to these communities are expressed in our Code of Conduct and Human Rights Position Statement .
The goal is to avoid harm to people and work with our customers to maintain an operating environment in which communities as well as the energy industry can prosper. This can only be achieved through the effective management of our interactions, activities, and outcomes with respect to the communities and other local stakeholder groups.
In alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we seek to address local challenges and drive positive impact in our communities, recognizing that the most sustainable social investments are those that bring shared value in terms of tangible societal benefits and business results.
We have assessed SDG gaps for all countries where we have a physical presence, based on input from local teams, publicly available data, and interviews with local external stakeholders. With an understanding of their operational impacts and the SDG gaps, local management teams select several SDGs on which to concentrate their efforts and submit social investment plans through a centralized portal.
We believe that empowering the educational advancement of women and children makes a powerful contribution to developing economies as well as to the individuals themselves. Our educational focus is on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Read more about our educational outreach programs.
In each geography where it operates, SLB looks to recruit personnel, optimize use of in-country suppliers, and develop regional technical capabilities to help build a sustainable industrial base for the energy industry—in line with business objectives and supply chain needs as well as societal expectations.
We look to comply with both regulatory and contractual requirements for local content. In fact, we strive to go beyond compliance and contribute to sustainable development by implementing local content plans and in-house programs that support supplier development and enhance the scale and quality of local procurement.
We're committed to optimizing the opportunities afforded to local suppliers based in the countries where we operate, when this is technically feasible and lawful and makes business sense. We cultivate and engage these suppliers, in particular those based in the communities affected by our operations. For example, we seek to ensure that they have the skills necessary to deliver the required scope of work and that they are afforded the same opportunities to participate in the procurement process as supply chain participants from elsewhere .
We recognize that our ability to attract, develop, motivate, and retain a highly competent and diverse workforce has been the key to our success for many decades. We are committed to fostering the growth and development of our people.
It is critical that our teams have the ability to communicate with customers in their native languages and share the values of the people in the countries where we work. Schlumberger is known as a company with global resources and local expertise, able to understand, respect, and work in the local culture of our customers. Diversity and inclusion are business imperatives for attracting the best talent from across the world and enabling creativity and innovation to drive business success.
We are investing in regional technical strategies that facilitate energy access with a high degree of local content. The two themes related to these strategies are Fit for Basin and Technology Access. Our ambition is to generate growth and improve our returns while creating local value and opportunity and indirectly contributing to energy access. In-country value creation and local partnerships are key components of these solutions.
We are running coding and robotic workshops at a school in Egypt to spark students' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our team has also equipped the school with refurbished computers and furniture to set up a computer lab.
We provide educational opportunities for school-age students, support teachers, and fund PhD and postdoctoral women researchers, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
